Cynthia McSweeney for Great Valley School Board

Common sense goals for challenging times:

  • Committed to supporting the best in student achievement for all students,  in all disciplines
  • Committed to an enriched educational experience for all students
  • Maximize student services—academic and otherwise—by minimizing overhead, bureaucratic “bloat”, and waste
  • Maximize our student’s potential by working together as a community

Professional experience critical to do the job:

  • Auditing and Management experience with Coopers & Lybrand and former Certified Public Accountant
  • Financial Statement preparation, Financial Analysis, Regulatory Reporting and Management experience with Sun Oil
  • Former Licensed realtor

In her own words:

“As a Great Valley resident for 21 years and the proud mother of two former Great Valley students—now grown—I understand the concerns of those with children currently in school. I have been through the college selection process, and through it all, came to realize the critical importance of each “educational dollar” in preparing our kids for the challenges ahead.

There are no easy answers as to how to do this, but money alone is absolutely no guarantee of educational quality. Raising taxes—even during healthier economic times—should never be the automatic solution.

During these difficult economic times, in particular, we have the responsibility to our community and to our students to be efficient and effective with every dollar we spend so that we can continue to improve the quality of the education offered by Great Valley and provide our graduates with a competitive edge.

Throughout this campaign, I have met many of you and remain fully committed to maintaining that dialogue—it is  essential that we keep the lines of communication open to provide the best in public education. It is vital that School Board members hear from you in order to make the decisions that best serve you and your families!

Even if we were all equally financially blessed in Great Valley, every dollar authorized by the School Board must still have measurable benefit to our students—that is the due diligence our current Board has performed and a trend I am committed to continuing.

Under the current Board, we have seen better test scores and student achievement, a preserved and generous student-teacher ratio, and no significant change in student enrichment (sports, music, gifted) programs. Our current Board also chose to cash out and terminate a SWAP at a healthy $1.5 million profit, thereby eliminating future interest rate risk. I have the professional skills, experience, and the will to continue this “winning” trend for our students.

We must show ourselves to be the caring and responsible citizens who, by our choices on Election Day, select those who can do the hard work required of the School Board. I have the skills, experience and desire to best serve our Great Valley community, and hope that I have earned your trust and your vote.”

Common Sense Solutions:

“We are facing a Financial Crisis and difficult decisions need to be made. We must work together as a community to face these challenges ahead–
we all pay taxes and we all want them put to the best use educating our children.
Wasting our financial resources results in our failure to give our kids the best education and this counters our goal.”

  • B.S. Penn State University (Accounting); Certified Public Accountant (1978)
  • Over thirteen years experience as an auditor and corporate accountant  (Coopers & Lybrand, Sun Oil)
  • Ten years experience in accounting services, including preparation and analysis of financial statements, tax preparation, and cash management
  • Licensed residential realtor

For Our Kids, for Our Community:

“The next generation deserves the best education that we have to offer. GVSD has essentially the same enrollment and class size they have had for ten years, with costs down and academic scores up in the past year.  This proves that we can work smarter.  I bring the skills, the integrity and the common sense necessary to continue that trend.”

  • My husband Rich and I have lived in Great Valley for over twenty years.
  • Parents of two Great Valley School District students, one currently attending Penn State

My Priorities

Make the most of the resources we have through sound management–raising taxes should be the solution of absolute last resort. Higher taxes penalize the entire community, including parents facing higher costs in raising kids and higher college costs, as well as those on fixed incomes.  I have the skills to identify and analyze expenditures, line by line in a budget, prioritize them, and put our resources to the best and most efficient use.

Increase the value of a Great Valley education. Costs associated with living in the Great Valley School District can only be justified when its value is proven. As a parent, a former financial and real estate professional and as a business owner, I appreciate the personal and financial costs at stake for us, our children, and our community.

Maximize student servicesacademic and otherwisewhile minimizing overhead and bureaucratic bloat. Real solutions are only found through realistic and professional assessment and collaboration, not just good intentions.  I recognize the need to spend our hard earned tax dollars more intelligently, efficiently and resourcefully.

Work together as a community. To create the best education for our children, all parties need to work together.  As a country, we lag in education in the K through 12 years, especially in science and math. Although this is a national challenge, our success as a country starts with each individual community.

  1. Patrick Baker says:

I have just now replied to a Len Doro in our community, who sent a broadcast email touting Ellen Behrle for School Board on the basis that she is “a Great Valley mom who cares a lot about keeping Great Valley …Great”, as follows:

“Being a mom and parent of GV students (my guess) is great but being that and a respected CPA and businesswoman, who is in tune with the need to control taxes, is even better. On that basis it seems that Cynthia McSweeney is the preferred candidate.”

    I hope you win!
